約20年以上も前に、教授は、現新潟大学医学部細菌学教室の山本達男教授（当時:順天堂大学医学部）と一緒に、病原性大腸菌の毒素遺伝子の塩基配列のコドン頻度の偏りを統計的に調べて、それらがコレラ菌と同じグループのVibrio属の細菌のゲノムから水平遺伝子移行で大腸菌ゲノムに取り込まれた可能性を、世界で初めて指摘しました。
