旧正月は、１月２３日から始まるとのこと。アジアが中心でしょうが、全体として約３１億人の大移動が始まるようです。
中華料理を食べるとき、みんなでテーブルに着きますね。テーブルに着くとたいていの場合、回転テーブルが乗っています。あの回転テーブルのことを、英語では「Lazy Susan」といいます。（註1）そのことを石油会社のコマーシャルで聞いて、旧正月とともに思い出してしまいました。
適切な例ではありませんが、のぞき見するいやらしい男のことを「Peeping Tom」というのに似ていますね。英語で、正確には「覗き魔」のこと。ゴダイヴァ夫人の裸身を覗みた男の名に由来するとのことです。なお、「ゴダイヴァ夫人」は、ベルギーの有名なチョコレート「ゴディバ」の起原ともなっているようです。なんか、粋な縁ですね。
そういえば、「Big John」という意味は、様々には使われますが、隠語でもありました。

The term "Lazy Susan" made its first written appearance in a Good Housekeeping article in 1906, although their existence dates back to the 18th century. Prior to the use of the term 'Lazy Susan', they were referred to as dumbwaiters, a term today applied to a small elevator for transporting food.
