、「Jim Watson博士の十戒(その7)」

最後に、85歳のJim Watson博士が語る科学への思いを込めた教訓です。
教授は、「Jim Watson博士の十戒(その7)」と呼んでいます。これは、博士に敬意を表して、和訳しないことに致します。

1. Go for scientific gold, e.g. curing cancer as opposed to treating it - preventing Alzheimer’s disease - learning the language by which the brain stores information

2. Know more facts about your objective than anyone else; 3-4 hours of journal readings per day

3. Success comes best starting from ideas as well as unexplained facts

4. Ponder the potential significance of a fact long before it becomes experimentally 100% certain

5. Don’t expect encouragement from others until real gold has been found

6. Staying on the lecture (gossip) circuit generates new scientific friends

7. Don’t expect special treatment from respected journals; good referees strengthen most research reports

8. Without regular exercise your brain as well as body will run downhill toward dementia. Engage in strenuous exercise (e.g. singles tennis with young pros) at least several times every week
